CNC Routing vs. Laser Engraving: Which One Do You Need?
Not sure whether your project needs CNC routing or laser engraving? Here's a practical breakdown of when to use each — and when you need both.
We get this question a lot: “Do I need CNC or laser?” The answer depends on your material, the level of detail you need, and how thick the material is.
Here’s a straightforward comparison based on the work we do every day.
Laser Engraving: Fine Detail and Thin Materials
A laser uses a focused beam of light to burn, score, or cut material. It excels at:
- Sharp inside corners — unlike a CNC router bit (which is round), a laser can make perfectly sharp 90-degree corners
- Fine text and logos — great for branded items, awards, and detailed patterns
- Thin materials — cuts through material up to about 1/8 inch thick
- Surface engraving — burns images, text, or patterns into the surface without cutting through
- Water bottles and coated items — the laser burns off the coating to reveal the metal underneath
Our laser cutting surface is 12 by 24 inches. We also have access to a larger 4 by 8 foot laser for bigger jobs.
CNC Routing: Thick Materials and Large Pieces
A CNC router uses a spinning bit to cut and carve material. It’s better for:
- Thick materials — handles material up to 10 inches thick
- Large pieces — our big machine does 5 by 10 foot sheets
- 3D carving — creates dimensional shapes like sink forms, banisters, and furniture legs
- Production runs — cuts hundreds of identical pieces with repeatable precision
- Structural parts — cabinet components, countertops, set pieces that need to bear weight
When You Need Both
Some of our best projects use both processes:
- Signage: CNC routes the overall shape, laser engraves the fine text and logo detail
- Branded products: CNC cuts the form, laser adds the personalization
- Art pieces: CNC creates the layered structure, laser adds surface detail
Quick Decision Guide
| Your project needs… | Use |
|---|---|
| Cut through thick wood/plastic/foam | CNC |
| Engrave text, logos, or images on a surface | Laser |
| Sharp inside corners on thin material | Laser |
| Large pieces (over 12” × 24”) | CNC |
| 3D shapes or carved surfaces | CNC |
| Water bottle or metal marking | Laser |
| Both cutting and engraving | Both |
